'India Has Every Ingredient Needed to Become a Serious Ship-Building Country' | Firstpost Ideas Pod Speaking at the Firstpost Ideas Pod at the Raisina Dialogue 2025, Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, and Brent Sadler, Senior Research Fellow for Naval Warfare and Advanced Technology at The Heritage Foundation, discussed the geopolitical implications of China’s dominance in shipping and maritime infrastructure. In conversation with Rachel Rizzo, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center, Sanyal highlighted India's underperformance in shipbuilding, stating, "India builds about some 5% of the world’s ships. Now, that's ridiculous because we have every ingredient needed to be a real serious shipbuilding country." He emphasised that India is now prioritizing its maritime sector, adding, "We have created a maritime fund. We are just in the process of creating it. We have made ship infrastructure which allows our banks to give them very long loans." On China’s control over global maritime trade, Sadler noted, "China effectively controls the terms of trade through a network of strategically positioned ports—either owned or operated by the Chinese Communist Party—along with being the largest shipbuilder and shipping enterprise in the world right now." Sanyal also highlighted the potential of the Quad (Australia, India, Japan, and the United States) in countering China's maritime dominance. He said, "The four of us together have all the pieces needed to build a significant shipbuilding ecosystem."
