You may even spot birds and insects depending on the season. But nature isn't the only thing that makes this place special. Inside the shrine grounds lies the Yoyogi Hachiman Archaeological Site. Excavations carried out in 1950 uncovered remains of Jomon-period dwellings, pottery, and stone tools. Around 5,000 years ago, long before skyscrapers, trains, and the modern city of Tokyo existed, people are believed to have gathered on this hill and lived together in a settlement. The shrine also preserves historic treasures from later periods, including valuable large votive paintings from the Edo period, as well as monuments dating back to the Meiji era. From the Jomon period to the present day, layers of history remain hidden within this peaceful forest.
