42,000 years ago, meeting another human didn't mean meeting someone like you. It meant possibly meeting a Neanderthal. Or a Denisovan. Or, on one Indonesian island, a species barely a meter tall that everyone just calls the hobbit.
For most of human history, we weren't alone. At least six different human species shared this planet at overlapping points, sometimes the same valleys, sometimes the same beds. This one covers all of them: the crowded family tree nobody teaches you about, the "hobbit" of Flores and its island-dwarfism theory, the Denisovans, a species discovered almost entirely from a single finger bone, the hard proof that we interbred with more than one of them (yes, that's why up to 2% of your DNA might be Neanderthal), the leading theories on why they didn't make it, and just how close humanity came to not being the one left standing.
You're not the inevitable endpoint of evolution. You're the last branch of a tree that used to have a lot more on it.
Which extinct human species would you want to meet? Tell me in the comments.
