What if play isn't just something children do, but one of the most important ways they understand the world?
In early childhood, children learn through movement, exploration, imagination, imitation, and meaningful experiences. Yet, in our attempt to make childhood productive, we sometimes overlook the importance of something that comes naturally to children: play.
Why do children need to play? Is play simply a way to keep them occupied, or does it serve a much deeper purpose? How can parents create an environment where children have the freedom to explore, imagine, and learn at their own pace?
In this session, Debaleena Biswas explores the importance of play in early childhood and how parents and caregivers can create a play-rich environment that supports children's holistic development.
Drawing from Waldorf-inspired education and conscious parenting principles, this conversation invites us to look beyond structured activities, toys that promise specific learning outcomes, and the pressure to keep children constantly engaged.
Instead, we explore the value of open-ended, child-led play, the role of boredom in nurturing imagination, the importance of sensory experiences, and how everyday environments can support a child's natural impulse to play.
In this video, we'll explore:
✦ Understanding Play & Its Importance
✦ The Role of Parents & Caregivers
✦ Boredom, Imagination & Creativity
✦ Open-Ended & Child-Led Play
✦ Sensory Play & the Role of Nature
✦ Creating a Play-Rich Environment at Home
✦ Building Rhythm into Everyday Life
✦ Reflection & Q&A
Whether you're a parent of a toddler or young child, an expecting parent, caregiver, or educator, this conversation will help you reflect on the role play occupies in a child's everyday life and how you can nurture it without over-directing it.
The goal isn't to teach children how to play. It's to create the time, space, and environment in which their natural capacity for play can flourish.
💬 We'd love to hear from you: What does play look like in your home? Does your child enjoy open-ended play, or do you find yourself constantly looking for activities to keep them engaged? Share your experiences in the comments.
