Claira and I headed up north to Bruce Bay Lodge in Algoma Country to fish for giant pike, walleye and smallmouth bass on the North Channel of Lake Huron, and somehow ended up catching one of the biggest smallmouth we have ever seen. We spent a few days staying right at Bruce Bay Lodge, an old-school Northern Ontario fishing lodge made up of cabins right on the water. Pat and Larry were amazing hosts and the whole property had so much character, including the old lighthouse at the end of the island that was built in 1907. It was such a cool place to stay and was the perfect home base for a few days of fishing and exploring. On our first day we launched out of Blind River and headed onto the North Channel, where we caught walleye, northern pike and some seriously big smallmouth bass. The biggest surprise of the trip was an unbelievable 8.25 lb smallmouth, which was definitely a fish neither of us will forget anytime soon. The next day we switched things up and headed to a little inland lake where we caught largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye and even a random bluegill. We ended up catching so many different species over the trip, which really showed us just how much fishing there is to experience in Algoma Country. We also took some time to explore Bruce Mines, wander through the antique shops, stop at the bakery and finish the day with fish and chips at Bobbers. Between the lodge, the fishing, the scenery and the little towns along the way, this was such a fun way to experience another part of Northern Ontario. A huge thank you to Destination Ontario for partnering with me on this trip and helping us showcase Bruce Bay Lodge, the North Channel and everything Algoma Country has to offer.
