Swamp Thing (1982) is a strange early comic book movie directed by horror legend Wes Craven and based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Starring Adrienne Barbeau and Louis Jourdan, this unusual blend of superhero movie, science fiction, horror, and creature feature follows scientist Alec Holland after a disastrous experiment transforms him into the monstrous Swamp Thing.
Marc, Bill, and Rena break down Wes Craven’s direction, Adrienne Barbeau’s performance, practical creature effects, the comic book origins, bizarre characters, cheesy dialogue, and the movie’s unmistakable early-’80s B-movie atmosphere. We also look at how Swamp Thing fits into the history of comic book movies and whether this strange DC adaptation deserves more attention.
Is Swamp Thing an overlooked comic book cult classic, a weird piece of ’80s horror, or a glorious swamp-dwelling mess? Join Reel Trash Cinema as we head into the muck and find out whether this movie is trash, treasure, or something wonderfully in between.
