I almost didn't make this video. It starts like one of my typical riding videos, but somewhere along the way I decided I needed to force myself to do something I've been avoiding. When I was a young man, I was a competitive swimmer. And I'll admit it — I was really good. Swimming was something I understood. I was obsessed with technique. If your stroke was sloppy, it didn't matter how fast you were. I knew I could beat you. The funny thing about swimming is that moving through the water was second nature to me. After my below-the-knee amputation, I became apprehensive about getting back in the pool. Not because I didn't know how to swim. Because I was afraid of finding out that I couldn't move through the water the way I used to. I didn't want that disappointment. So today, I finally got back in. This video starts with a ride, but ends with my first time back in the pool since my amputation — and a couple of experiments to see what I can still do in the water as an amputee. I don't know what I'm capable of anymore. That's what The Moxi Project is about. Finding out.
