On March 6th, 2025, a white Prius rolled into my shop with 287,000 miles on the odometer. The owner drove for a rideshare company and had done so for almost nine years. He was not there because something was broken. He was there because a friend had told him something that kept him up at night. He said: "My buddy says my starter has to be on borrowed time. My engine turns on and off maybe fifty times a day. No starter survives that. How much is it going to cost me when it dies?" I smiled, because I have heard that exact question more times than I can count. Then I told him something that made him stare at me like I was joking. "Your car doesn't have a starter. It never did." Today I am revealing what actually starts the engine in a Toyota hybrid hundreds of thousands of times over its life, why it almost never wears out, and the one small part that can still leave you stranded if you ignore it.
