When a multi-million dollar locomotive is involved in a serious collision or derailment, the disposition process that follows involves more parties, more documentation, and more competing financial interests than most people assume. Insurance adjusters, federal investigators, railroad mechanical officers, and salvage contractors all arrive at the wreck site with different priorities — the FRA wants the black box data and event recorder information before anything moves, the insurer wants an independent damage assessment, and the railroad wants to know if the prime mover and major components are salvageable before committing to a total loss declaration. Locomotives that survive crashes in repairable condition get rebuilt. The ones that don't get stripped for usable components and sold to scrappers for a fraction of their original cost.
