Maybe with your help, I can get over 10K subscribers soon to help even more drummers!!! ✨🙏🏻🌟🥁💯❤️ In this week’s Drums by Liz lesson I demonstrate and explain how to use rolls and press rolls to add some nice dimension to your grooves. Using the one handed press roll will be advantageous at faster tempos. We also have the option of using both hands and doing quick 5 stroke rolls. Practice and attain a nice clean, smooth sound with both concepts. The ultimate goal is to be able to play the notes in succession with one hand and make it sound relatively equal to a two-handed double stroke roll. For a nice variation and slightly different sound, transfer the double stroke rolls to HH. This adds nice texture/dimension into your grooves too. Remember sometimes you want the press roll effect with a more crushed sound. Each has merit. You will be able to pick and choose, which will be most appropriate to play in different playing situations. I guide and encourage all my students to develop the finer control in their non-dominant hand with this type of exercise and concept. We then ramp up the technical work by changing the amount of notes we put into play. As I demonstrate, you will see how to open up the press roll notes. Work on playing 3 notes, 4 notes, 6 notes and more. Each one will challenge you to change your approach and change your technique. Each requires you to change your touch and your feel. The more notes you have the more you will squeeze your stick (finger control). When attempting to play less notes try to adopt a Moeller technique/whipping motion (more arm motion). So as we analyze these things, we can see how there’s a lot going on here. Maybe even more than meets the eye to develop. These are more advanced concepts, so be patient with learning all this. Please reach out to me in the comments if I can help you in any way. Overall learning these more advanced technical aspects of play can really make our grooves sound fantastic! When we play things like this people tend to notice. Many times I will get comments from other drummers, musicians, audience members etc. who appreciate the developed skill and tend to like the sound of these tidbits. Those little inspirational moments matter. They definitely inspire us to keep crafting ourselves, developing new skills, and always keep moving in an onward and upward direction! As we know, we are so privileged to play the coolest instrument on earth, aren’t we!! I hope to constantly keep improving my content and upgrading the sound quality, taking time to edit, eventually having multiple camera angles etc. These are things that I know could definitely use an upgrade.
