250 years ago, on October 11, 1776, Benedict Arnold lost almost his entire fleet on Lake Champlain. One naval strategist later called it the most glorious defeat in American history. Was he right?
Before he became America's most famous traitor, Arnold commanded a homemade navy of gunboats built in the wilderness. Its job wasn't to win. It was to make the British wait. This documentary follows the shipbuilding race of 1776, the trap behind Valcour Island, a nighttime escape through the British line, the last run to Arnold's Bay, and the wrecks still on the lake bottom. Then it asks the question historians are still arguing about 250 years later: did this defeat really save the Revolution?
