My setting of W.B. Yeats’ The Lake Isle of Innisfree for SATB a cappella choir, performed by the wonderful Alma Consort, conducted by Luca Wetherall in London, England.
About the music:
Reading Yeats' poem, I was instantly mesmerized and immersed into the vivid setting he was describing. His poem, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree", is an evocative Romantic poem about finding peace within one's self through the idyllic depiction of an island located in Lough Gill in County Sligo, Ireland. While writing the music for this setting, I kept pictures of Lough Gill around me at all times. Immersing myself in the landscape, it was my aim to capture its natural serenity and mystery within the music's atmosphere. Additionally, I hoped to evoke the sense of melancholy that is evident in Yeats' poem as the narrator describes his inward visualization and longing for a place of peace and quiet, which seems almost void of time, as well as his desire for escape from industrial city life.
Text by W.B. Yeats:
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.
