HON. JOHN BWIRE: TAVETA’S VOICE, RUTO’S GOVERNMENT & THE 2032 QUESTION | THE WADAU PODCAST
What happens when a lawyer who defeated a political veteran becomes one of the most visible voices from Taveta — and increasingly finds himself at the centre of Taita Taveta’s evolving relationship with President William Ruto and his government?
In this episode of The Wadau Podcast, we sit down with Hon. John Bwire, Member of Parliament for Taveta, for a candid conversation about politics, leadership, development, identity and the future of Taita Taveta County.
The conversation comes at a significant moment following President William Ruto’s extensive tour of Taita Taveta, from Wundanyi and Taveta to Mwatate, Maungu and Voi, with the President set to return to Mwatate to issue title deeds. As one of the leaders involved in receiving and hosting the President, Bwire gives his perspective on what the visit means for Taveta and the county.
We explore John Bwire’s relationship with President Ruto and his administration, his increasingly visible role within the government’s political space, and the question of whether he is becoming a bridge between Taveta and the national government.
We also examine his record since defeating veteran politician Naomi Shaban in the 2022 Taveta parliamentary election, the development priorities of Taveta, and why he believes Taveta should have a stronger voice in Taita Taveta County leadership.
The conversation gets deeper when we discuss the argument that Governor Andrew Mwadime Wakujaa should pick his deputy from Taveta, the growing political conversation around 2032, and whether Bwire himself has his eyes on the Taita Taveta gubernatorial seat.
We also tackle the sensitive question of ethnicity and political leadership after recent controversy surrounding his Luhya ancestry and arguments that the county’s governorship should be reserved for native Taita people. How does Bwire respond to the idea that ethnic identity should determine who can lead Taita Taveta?
Bwire also addresses the controversy surrounding the Mwakoma funeral in Mbololo, where he delivered President Ruto’s KSh500,000 condolence contribution and added KSh100,000 of his own, before his remarks about government development projects drew criticism from Bishop Mgho’nda.
Beyond politics, we go back to the man behind the politician — his upbringing, his journey into law, more than a decade of legal practice, his transition into politics, and the experiences that shaped his leadership.
In this episode, we ask the questions many people are asking:
• What exactly is John Bwire’s relationship with President Ruto?
• Is Bwire becoming Ruto’s man in Taita Taveta, or Taveta’s man in Ruto’s government?
• What has he delivered for Taveta since defeating Naomi Shaban?
• Why should Wakujaa’s deputy come from Taveta?
• Is John Bwire preparing for the 2032 gubernatorial race?
• Can someone of Luhya ancestry lead Taita Taveta?
• Has ethnicity become a factor in the county’s politics?
• What really happened at the Mwakoma funeral?
• And ultimately, what does John Bwire want his political legacy to be?
This is not just a conversation about one MP. It is a conversation about Taveta, Taita Taveta politics, national power, identity, development and the political future of the county.
Watch, listen, join the conversation and tell us what you think.
