Episode 851 - How to Become a Better Listener During Podcast Interviews - Behind The Mic Series
Stop Planning, Start Listening
Podcast interviews can lose their energy when the interviewer focuses more on the next question than the person answering the current one. The question list sits in front of you, your brain jumps ahead, and you miss what your guest actually says.
Active listening requires a different focus. Dave shares a simple trick that forces the interviewer to stay present.
Use the Last Letter
Wait until your guest finishes the answer. Listen for the final word, then take the last letter of that word. Your next question must start with that letter.
If your guest ends with the word "show," your next question starts with W. If they finish with "feedback," your next question starts with K.
That sounds awkward. It works because you cannot prepare your next question until your guest finishes speaking. Your attention stays with the person in front of you.
You do not need to use the technique throughout an entire interview. Dave suggests using it whenever you notice yourself getting trapped inside your own thoughts or rushing toward the next question.
Give Your Guest Your Attention
The exercise creates intentional listening. Your guest can feel when you actually pay attention, and that attention can create a stronger conversation.
Practice the technique with someone you know before using it during a podcast interview. The goal is simple. Listen closely. Stay present. Follow the conversation instead of racing ahead.
Your next question can wait. Give your guest your full attention, listen for the final word, and use its last letter to shape your next question. The technique gives your brain a reason to stay with the conversation, and your podcast interview can become more natural and meaningful.
