In May 2015, Alberto Contador set out to win the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in the same summer, something nobody had done since Marco Pantani in 1998. Over three weeks the race threw everything at him. His shoulder dislocated twice in a crash on stage six. He lost the pink jersey in a pileup on the flattest stage of the race. He faced an Astana team with Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa and the numbers to attack him in every mountain range in Italy. And on stage 16, after a puncture before the Mortirolo, he chased the leaders alone up one of the hardest climbs in cycling. This is the full story of the 2015 Giro, stage by stage. It covers Richie Porte’s two-minute penalty for accepting a wheel from a rival, Astana’s internal power struggle, the dirt roads of the Colle delle Finestre, and Contador’s last Grand Tour victory.
