Egypt is a million square kilometres of land, yet almost every light at night sits along one thin line. In this countdown of 25 facts we follow that line: a city where rain can skip years, borders drawn with a ruler, a patch of land no country claims, a valley full of whale fossils, a delta that is retreating into the sea, and the reason most of them trace back to one cause. Egypt isn't really a desert with a river in it. It's a river with a desert around it.

Honest notes: estimates of how much of Egypt is inhabited vary with how the edges are drawn (one common figure is about 5.5% of the land for about 99% of people; the statistics-office figure of under 8% is from secondary reporting). The Rosetta retreat rate comes from one study. How Libyan Desert Glass formed, and how much the drying Sahara pushed people to the Nile, are still debated.
