HABIB MOHAMMED HASSEN — AFAR MADQA Head of the Afar Language, Culture, and History Study Institute 6th Annual Afar Day 2026 | Columbus, Ohio Dr. Habib Mohammed Hassen traveled all the way from Ethiopia to speak to us about Madqa — the customary law of the Afar people. Long before any constitution was written for us, our people had a system of justice of our own: how disputes are settled, how peace is restored between clans, how a community governs itself. Madqa is not folklore. It is law, and it has held our society together for centuries. And there is more. Afar Madqa is under consideration for inscription on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The committee meets in Xiamen, China, from 30 November to 5 December this year. If it is inscribed, our customary law joins the heritage of humanity — recognized by the world, protected for our grandchildren. This is one of many contributions our people are making.
