They were supposed to be the dumb cousins. Instead, Neanderthals were skilled woodworkers who built spears, plates, and furniture sixty thousand years ago.
In October 2026, a study in Science Advances revealed nearly 600 wooden remains from Abric Romaní, a rock shelter near Barcelona, Spain. Floods and mineral-rich water had sealed the wood in stone for 60,000 years — and 13 pieces turned out to be unmistakable Neanderthal tools: eight-foot spears, a mysterious carved club, bark trays, and the furniture of a home.
This documentary traces the discovery step by step: the century-old "dumb caveman" myth, the geology that preserved what wood could not, the detective work that separated tools from twigs, and what thirteen wooden objects tell us about people who were not quite us.
