They said having a baby is where a marriage gets tested, and this is 👶ABSOLUTELY TRUE. 💯
Having a child changes everything. The sleepless nights, miscommunication, lack of appreciation, household responsibilities, and emotional and physical exhaustion can take a toll on your relationship. Postpartum is not just about recovering from childbirth; it's also about adjusting to a completely new life.
My husband and I knew each other for eight years before getting married. We lived together before having a child, but nothing could fully prepare us for parenthood. We never attended classes on how to care for a baby or prepare ourselves for the challenges that came with it.
I realized that no matter how long you've known your partner, you won't truly know how you'll handle the hardest seasons of your relationship until you're in them. It's not just about how much you love each other, but also how you communicate, support one another, and face challenges as a team.
👩 To all the soon-to-be parents and new moms, please talk about postpartum before having a baby. Discuss your expectations, responsibilities, finances, emotional needs, and how you'll support each other during sleepless nights and difficult days. Pregnancy is only the beginning; preparing for what comes after is just as important.
My husband and I are not a perfect couple, and he isn't a perfect husband. But he supports me in what I want, what I need, and what is best for our family. And I've learned that support doesn't always have to be grand gestures. Sometimes, it's the little things that matter most.
Moms, please don't carry everything alone. You deserve support, too. Motherhood is already physically and emotionally demanding, and you shouldn't have to manage everything by yourself.
If you feed the baby, your partner can do the dishes. If you're exhausted, he can hold the baby while you rest. One can cook dinner while the other takes care of the baby. Ask each other, _What do you need right now? or How can I make today a little easier for you?”
It's not about keeping score or making everything 50/50 every single day. It's about showing up for each other, sharing responsibilities, and understanding that you're on the same team.
Postpartum is not something a mother should have to survive alone. She needs patience, reassurance, understanding, and a partner who listens without making her feel guilty for struggling. Sometimes, she doesn't need solutions; she just needs someone to hold her, hear her, and remind her that she's doing a good job.
To the new moms out there, don't be afraid to speak up about what you need. And to the partners, remember that your wife is also learning how to be a mother while healing physically and emotionally. Check on her, listen to her, and make sure she's taking care of herself, too.
A baby needs a healthy, supported mom, and a mom needs a support system. You brought this child into the world together, so learn to navigate parenthood together, too.
Love is important, but so are communication, patience, teamwork, and understanding. You don't have to be perfect parents or a perfect couple. You just have to keep choosing to support each other, especially when things get hard. ❤️
