I made two notepads, one small (2” x 3.5”) and one large (3.5” x 9”). For the longer notepad, I used the cardboard backing from a notepad I recently used up because it still had the magnetic sheet on the back of it. This project took a month; I started it mid-August and finished mid-September. Of course, I couldn't spend all of my time on it due to work. I did this video in four segments and decided to put Segments 1 and 2 into one video (Part 1). Segments 3 (gluing the notepads) and 4 (wrapping it all up) will comprise Part 2. I thought making notepads would be relatively simple, but I was sooo wrong about that. Segment 1 was cutting the paper into about 100 3.5” x 9” strips and drawing lines on each of those pieces of paper. The smaller pad was made of the leftover pieces from trimming 8.5” x 11” 20-lb. paper into the 3.5” x 9” strips. I made my own line stencil from a piece packaging chipboard, but I knew that drawing lines on so many pieces of paper would take a long time, so I bought a line stencil (2-pk, 8mm and 9mm) and divided the 8mm one into two areas, using masking tape. Fortunately, with that system, I could draw the lines on two papers at a time, and that process cut the time in half. Segment 2 was all about decorating the top and bottom portions of each paper. On video, I decorated two papers because doodling and coloring take a while to do. Segment 3 was the most challenging because I had to make sure the papers were straight and lined up perfectly before pressing the notepads with a book press so I could apply the padding glue. The book press proved to be difficult at times. Segment 4 was removing the pad from the book press and inspecting the pads and doing a flip-through of sorts of the larger pad. With all the difficulty I experienced, I still want to make more notepads. I think, with time and practice, I will be able to perfect my methods. Stay tuned for Part 2.
