Superintendent Graeme Gallie from Police Scotland shares his personal experience as a dyslexic leader and explores how Police Scotland is working to create a more neuroinclusive organisation.
As National Delivery Lead for Neurodiversity and Policing in Scotland, Graeme discusses the importance of visible leadership, lived experience and evidence-based approaches to supporting neurodivergent officers, staff and the communities they serve.
He explains how Police Scotland, an organisation of approximately 22,000 people, is developing its approach through awareness training, staff support networks, improved policies and academic research.
Graeme also highlights why emergency services cannot be expected to be experts in every condition, but must be able to recognise individual needs, understand vulnerability and respond appropriately.
Key topics include:
Graeme’s personal journey with dyslexia and leadership.
How Police Scotland is embedding neurodiversity into its organisational strategy.
The importance of listening to neurodivergent colleagues.
Developing practical awareness training for officers and managers.
Using research and lived experience to inform workplace improvements.
Why recognising individual strengths and needs is essential to creating a thriving workforce.
The key message: Supporting neurodivergent colleagues isn’t simply about addressing challenges. It’s about understanding individuals, recognising their strengths and creating workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Recorded as part of the NATTC 999 Neurodiversity Summit 2026, bringing together leaders and professionals from across the emergency services to explore how we can create more inclusive workplaces.
