The Creativity You Were Taught to Outgrow | Allegra Huston

Who told you that you weren’t creative—and when did you start believing them? Author and creativity teacher Allegra Huston joins me for a conversation about finding your own voice, questioning other people’s expectations, and trying something before you talk yourself out of it. Growing up in the well-known Huston family, Allegra found that people’s assumptions about her life often didn’t match her experience. She shares how she began figuring out where she belonged and what mattered to her. We also get into something I struggle with: wanting to tell my own story, then worrying that it’s selfish or that somebody will be upset. If you’ve ever said “I’m not a writer,” or felt like something you enjoy has to earn money to be worth your time, there’s a lot here for you. IN THIS EPISODE • The stories we inherit about who we’re supposed to be. • Why we dismiss our own creativity. • Giving yourself permission to write without publishing. • Imaginative intelligence and “write what you don’t know.” • The fear of judgment when you tell your own story. • Finding community where you can try something new. TRY ALLEGRA’S WRITING EXERCISE Think of a memory that matters to you. Start with “I don’t remember” and write for ten minutes. See what comes up without deciding where it needs to go.
