Drunk, I Gaze at My Sword by Lamplight
In 1162, Xin Qiji served in Geng Jing’s anti-Jin force. Geng sent him south to pledge allegiance to the Southern Song. Returning north, Xin learned Zhang Anguo and Shao Jin had killed Geng and defected to the Jin. Xin and his companions entered a Jin camp, seized Zhang while he drank with Jin officers, and brought him to the Southern Song court. This bilingual MV uses that episode and Xin’s poem “Po Zhen Zi” to imagine his later memories. Its battles are artistic interpretations.

Chinese Lyrics
English Translation
Drunk, I raise the lamp to gaze at my sword
In dreams, horns sound across the camps
Roast meat is shared among the troops
Fifty strings play a frontier tune
Autumn muster on the battlefield
Banners lash across the sky
Iron riders break through dusk clouds
War horns lift the dust for miles
My steed flies like the famed Dilu
The bowstring cracks like thunder
One arrow cuts through the night
The troops ride with me to the frontier
I’d give my blood for peace across the land
Across endless passes, I ride on
My wish is to hear victory songs ring out
Though the dream ends, the horn still sounds in me
Beacon fires light the fading sun
The long wind lifts our weathered banners
Steel glints on snow, cold as water
War drums urge us past Yanmen
We cross sand and countless ridges
So spring may return to our homeland
My steed flies like the famed Dilu
The bowstring cracks like thunder
I look back at distant lights of home
Ahead, a thousand mountains stand
I’d give my blood for peace across the land
Across endless passes, I ride on
My wish is to hear victory songs ring out
Though the dream ends, the horn still sounds in me
A thousand riders sweep through autumn wind
A thousand crossbows release beneath fading stars
Where banners point, the battle smoke clears
Cheers resound through the city gates
Then a distant voice asks
When will our deeds honor those we have lost?
To settle the realm’s affairs for our ruler
And earn a name in life and after death
In dreams, the armies sing of victory
Awake, I face a window full of stars alone
The autumn wind will not fall silent
The last wine catches a lonely flame
The sword still holds its cold gleam
The frost at my temples is plain to see
I leave this ardent blood to an unfinished dawn
Though I fall silent, a thousand horses thunder within
I’d give my blood for peace across the land
Across endless passes, I ride on
My wish is to hear victory songs ring out
Though the dream ends, the horn still sounds in me
I leave my ardent blood as a light for those who follow
Though years turn my hair white, it lights the way ahead
Alas, my hair has turned white!
The sword has not gone cold.
The sword has not gone cold.
