Nix Week 2 Board & Train | Learning Leave It & Impulse Control | Best Paw Forward Dog Training

Nix (Onyx) the Staffordshire Mix is continuing his second week of our 4-week Board & Train Program at Best Paw Forward Dog Training in Perkasie, PA! In today's training video, Nix worked on the beginning stages of the "leave it" command, focusing on building impulse control, learning to make better choices, and understanding how to disengage from things when asked. Leave it is an important skill that can be used in many everyday situations, whether it's ignoring food on the ground, leaving household items alone, or redirecting attention away from distractions. Since Nix is still in the early stages of learning this command, we're starting with simple exercises in a controlled environment to help him understand what we're asking before gradually increasing the difficulty. Tips for practicing at home: Start simple: Practice with lower-value items in a quiet environment before introducing bigger distractions. Reward good choices: Mark and reward Nix when he disengages from an item and redirects his attention back to you. Be consistent: Make sure everyone uses the same command and expectations. Increase difficulty gradually: As Nix becomes more reliable, introduce different items and environments. Set him up for success: Avoid putting him in situations that are too challenging before he fully understands the command. Leave it will be especially helpful for Nix as we continue working on his mouthiness, overall listening skills, and impulse control throughout his program.
