For 1,428 years, nobody on Earth could read Egyptian. The temples were still standing. The writing was still there. And not one person alive could pronounce it. Egypt is the strangest death in human history — because the country never died. Iran, China and Greece were conquered too, and they kept their languages. Egypt didn't. An Egyptian today reads his own pharaohs in translation, and that translation was made by a Frenchman. This is the story of a civilization with one single point of failure: a writing system owned entirely by a few thousand temple scribes. Nobody burned it. Nobody banned it. The Greeks made it useless, Rome defunded it, and one afternoon in 394 AD a priest at Philae carved the last sentence in hieroglyphs without knowing it was the last. Then came fourteen centuries of silence — and the man who broke it using a dead church language nobody else had bothered to learn.
