Huygens’ Principle | 12th Class Physics New Syllabus — In this lecture, we study Topic 15.2 Huygens’ Principle from Chapter 15 – Physical Optics for FSc Part 2 / 12th Class Physics. In this lecture, we build the concept of Huygens’ Principle from the basics and understand how it can be used to determine the shape and position of a new wavefront from a previously known wavefront. The lecture explains the two fundamental ideas behind Huygens’ Principle: every point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary wavelets, and these wavelets spread in all directions with the same speed as the original wave. Using clear whiteboard diagrams, we then see how these secondary wavelets combine to form the new wavefront. We also explain the concept of the envelope of secondary wavelets and derive the distance travelled by the wave during a time interval using: d = vt The construction of a new wavefront is explained step by step by considering an original wavefront and drawing secondary wavelets of radius vt from different points on it. The surface tangent to these wavelets represents the new wavefront. Finally, we briefly compare Huygens’ Principle with Maxwell’s Theory and understand why Huygens’ simple geometrical approach remains convenient for studying wave propagation.
