The work features a group of ferns of the species Dryopteris wallichiana, on which electrodes sensitive to minute electrical variations are placed. These pulsations, unique to living plants, are translated into sound data that generate a musical landscape broadcast throughout the exhibition. This sound installation transforms the plant into a veritable conductor: it sets the rhythm, modulates the intensity and guides the composition in real time. The viewer is immersed in a sensory experience that evokes ‘ecological memories’, an attentiveness to the environment and its invisible dynamics. Clément Davout (aka Adhémar) and Léo Fourdrinier work as a duo to develop a body of work combining sculpture, installation, video and sound art, which explores contemporary ecological imbalances and the dynamics of human impact on natural environments. Through installations inspired by gardens, dioramas and aquariums, they create sensitive environments in which the tensions between living organisms and the human footprint are re-enacted. Their works, conceived in relation to the locations that host them, explore the fragility of ecosystems, the gradual disappearance of certain natural worlds, and the effects of the increasing artificialisation of our environment. The duo thus develops a critical and poetic approach to nature, seeking to represent what persists, deteriorates or reinvents itself in the face of environmental upheavals. Clément Davout and Léo Fourdrinier, born in 1993 and 1992 respectively, live and work between Paris and Toulon. They graduated from the Caen/Cherbourg School of Arts and Media in 2017. Their collaborative work has recently been exhibited in France at Le Confort Moderne (Poitiers), Le Tube (Strasbourg), La Biennale de la jeune création (Mulhouse), Le Cargö (Caen), Le Festival des Arts Ephémères (Marseille), Le Port Des Créateurs (Toulon), Les Salins des Pesquiers (Hyères), Le Jardin Remarquable (Baudouvin); in Luxembourg at the Agence luxembourgeoise d’action culturelle – Cercle Cité; in Germany at HALLE 14 – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst – SPINNEREI (Leipzig) and Soej Kritik (Leipzig); and in Belgium at Art Au Centre (Liège) and Le Lac (Brussels). The work was produced with the support of the Luxembourg Agency for Cultural Action and the Parks and Forests Department, as part of LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden for Cercle Cité. Its conception is closely linked to the Luxembourg landscape, its plant species and the imagery of its landscapes. The two artists followed a multi-stage process in creating the work, beginning with an initial residency in 2023 to carry out site surveys and sound recordings on location. ☝️ Support The Artists & Labels, that You Love, Please.
