Crete is counting the cost after days of violent autumn rain turned roads into torrents and pushed cars and trees into the sea near Ierapetra. This update follows what happened across the island — the trapped drivers on the Ierapetra–Sitia road, the waves that flooded Chania's old harbour, the villages cut off in Mylopotamos, the flooded Lasithi Plateau, and the eight Samaria Gorge workers waiting for the water to fall.
Latest at upload: one lane has reopened at Ferma on the Ierapetra–Sitia road while work continues on the second lane. The eight Samaria workers were still reported in good health, with a first exit possible from Wednesday if the water keeps falling.
Earth Weather Report will keep following the recovery: road reopening, the Samaria exit, official damage assessments and any new warnings from Greek authorities.
