Himalayan Buddhist Art: Gods, Monsters, Mandalas, and Meditation What comes to mind when you think of Buddhist art? Peaceful Buddhas, meditating monks, and serene temples? Tibetan Buddhist art tells a much more dramatic story. This talk explores the rich visual culture of Tibetan Buddhist art and its profound connection to practices of visualisation and learning. Focusing on forms such as thangkas and mandalas, it examines how these works function as structured tools for meditation and knowledge transmission. Through guided imagery and symbolic detail, practitioners internalise complex philosophical teachings, transforming visual engagement into a disciplined cognitive process. The lecture shows how art, perception, and memory intersect in Tibetan Buddhism, revealing a tradition in which seeing is inseparable from understanding — and one that modern cognitive science and neuroscience now strongly support, demonstrating the powerful role of visualisation in shaping attention, memory, and learning. About the Speaker: Rose Woodward is an artist and writer whose work explores the intersection of sacred art, philosophy, and contemplative traditions. A graduate of the Kent Institute of Art and Design, she developed an early fascination with the visual language of ancient spiritual cultures, which evolved into more than a decade of dedicated study in theology and comparative religion, with particular emphasis on Eastern philosophical traditions. Her research has focused especially on Buddhism and the rich artistic heritage that has emerged from its devotional and philosophical practices. This long-term exploration of sacred imagery ultimately led to the research, curation, and creation of her book Buddhism – A Journey Through Art, released in 2023 with Interlink Publishing Group, ROLI Books and Nepko — a 400-page visual survey of Buddhist art spanning more than two millennia.
