If We Can't Wake Up

What if the world doesn't need us to save it all at once—but simply to wake up, pay attention, and take one small step toward a better future? "If We Can't Wake Up" is a song about the challenges we face as a world: climate change, the distractions that pull us away from what matters, the suffering we overlook, and the uncertainty of a future increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. But this isn't a song about giving up. It's about remembering that even when the problems seem impossibly large, our choices still matter. We don't have to fix everything today. We can start by being present. By listening instead of turning away. By choosing compassion over judgment. By taking one small step, then another. Because perhaps the change we're waiting for begins with us. "One breath. One step. One heart open wide." WHY I CREATED THIS SONG For more than a year, I've been writing down thoughts and lyrics inspired by the state of our world, our collective suffering, and the possibility of a different future. The accelerating development of artificial intelligence has been a particular concern of mine. While AI offers extraordinary opportunities, I worry about the risks of pursuing increasingly powerful systems without adequate safeguards, independent oversight, and meaningful international cooperation. We cannot afford to treat humanity's future as a race that someone must win. But my concerns go beyond AI. Climate change, our increasingly fractured attention, our tendency to judge one another, and the suffering we perpetuate when we stop paying attention are all connected by a deeper question: Can we wake up to what's happening around us—and respond with awareness, compassion, and action? ABOUT THE MUSIC AND VIDEO The lyrics began as my own reflections and writing, which I later refined with the assistance of AI. The music and vocals were generated using AI (Suno) to bring the song's message to life. I'm incredibly grateful that these tools have given me a way to express myself creatively that I never really had before. I'm an average singer at best, and I don't play any musical instruments, so for a long time, the words I wrote remained just that—words sitting in my notes. Being able to turn those thoughts and feelings into an actual song has been an extraordinary gift. Whatever concerns I may have about the future of AI, I can also recognize and appreciate the opportunities it offers to people who have something they want to express but may lack the technical or artistic skills to bring it to life. A CALL TO ACTION I believe we have a choice: we can turn away from the challenges facing humanity, or we can begin responding to them. We don't have to wait for someone else to save the world. We can educate ourselves, organize peacefully, support meaningful safeguards for emerging technologies, make more sustainable choices, and practice greater compassion toward one another. Real change doesn't always begin with something enormous. Sometimes it begins with something almost imperceptible. And we have no idea what the flap of one butterfly's wings might set in motion.
