In 499 BCE, exiles from Naxos came to Miletus asking Aristagoras to restore them to power. A Persian-backed expedition to the Cyclades collapsed, leaving him exposed, and the acting ruler of Miletus turned a bid for imperial advancement into revolt. When the Athenian assembly voted twenty ships, those hulls helped carry an attack on Sardis—and pulled Athens into open conflict with Darius.
This documentary follows the Ionian Revolt from the failed siege of Naxos through the overthrow of Persian-backed rulers, the burning of the lower city of Sardis, fighting on Cyprus and in Caria, and the disintegration of the rebel fleet at Lade. It ends with the fall of Miletus in 494, the suppression of 493, and an Athenian theater that fined a playwright for reminding the city of its own misfortunes. Herodotus is the principal surviving account; Persian authority returned to the Anatolian coast, but the facts of mainland intervention did not go away.
