We talk a lot about minimising cognitive load, managing cognitive debt, reducing team cognitive load, and other scientific-sounding endeavours on our path to improving the efficacy of software teams. But what if we are starting from a false premise?
As one of the people responsible for introducing the idea of cognitive load to at least some of the Team Topologies folks, I feel a mea culpa duty of care to put my hand up and suggest we might be getting it all wrong, and that modern teaming strategies might be making things worse instead of better.
What if there is no such thing as "intrinsic" cognitive load, "extraneous" is extraneous, and "germane" is just one of the Jacksons? I want to take a fresh look at cognitive load to see if we can genuinely make life easier for ourselves.
