Spurgeon opens by establishing that the text's word "conversation" means the whole course of life and public conduct rather than mere speech, before driving a sharp wedge between two kinds of appeal for holy living — the legalist's "live well so God will accept you" and the gospel preacher's "live well because God has already accepted you in Christ" — insisting that true gospel obedience is the grateful response of people already justified, not the ladder by which justification is reached. He then works through eight qualities of the gospel itself that the Christian's daily life must resemble: simplicity (transparent and child-like, undisguised by social performance or elaborate ornament), truthfulness (a Christian's bare word being as trustworthy as another man's oath, with no padding, no slander, no careless repetition of rumor), fearlessness (bold to hold every conviction without apology or social cowardice, boldly insisting that "he that believes not shall be damned" while opposing a hollow "modern charity" that gags every honest difference), gentleness (a lion's heart with a lady's hand, never vinegary, never harsh, never driving away the very broken people the gospel came to heal), love (living proof of Christ's command that disciples love one another and all men), mercy and generosity (refusing to drink the blood of the poor while making long public prayers), and holiness (excluding from the Christian life everything sinful or doubtful without nostalgia). He closes with three urgent warnings: an inconsistent Christian's sins are never private but become arrows in the hands of every enemy who attacks innocent fellow believers, dishonor to the professor always attaches itself ultimately to Christ and the gospel rather than to the individual alone, and a person who makes no profession at all is thereby making a daily open profession of being God's enemy — leaving Christ's blood as the only answer for both groups, since only a heart washed there will have either the motive or the power to live a life that becomes the gospel.
