Pertwilla, Florida. East Poho County. Cattle country, one high school, and a baseball team that just made the regional semifinal. The whole county turned out. The same week, an old barn burned out past Wheaton Valley. The dead man inside ran a roadside attraction, five dollars a look at something he kept chained in the dark for twenty-three years. No remains were recovered. Neither was the exhibit. Two nights later, two boys drove home from the game of their lives and never made it. Their car sat on the shoulder of East Nine with the doors open and the engine running, and a letterman jacket folded square on the roof that nobody in either family folded. One of their phones was still recording. The county has been here before. Fifty-five. Seventy-eight. Two thousand one. Every time, a report. Every time, an animal named. Nobody fights this thing and wins. You lock your doors, you count your people, and every twenty-three springs, something counts back. The boy on that phone was seventeen, with the best fastball in the county, and he believed to the last recording that he was coming home. His mother wants you to hear him. Twenty-three days.
