അഞ്ച് നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് 26 നഗരങ്ങളിലേക്ക്; രാജ്യത്തെ മെട്രോ ശൃംഖലയില്‍ വന്‍ വളര്‍ച്ച; വികസന കണക്കുകള്‍ പങ്കുവെച്ച് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി രാജ്യത്തെ മെട്രോ റെയില്‍ ശൃംഖലയില്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞ പത്ത് വര്‍ഷത്തിനിടെ വലിയ വികസനം ഉണ്ടായതായി പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്ര മോദി. 2014ല്‍ വെറും അഞ്ച് നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രമായി പരിമിതപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മെട്രോ സര്‍വീസുകള്‍ ഇന്ന് രാജ്യത്തെ 26 നഗരങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വ്യാപിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണെന്ന് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. മെട്രോ ശൃംഖലയുടെ ദൈര്‍ഘ്യം 248 കിലോമീറ്ററില്‍ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 1,200 കിലോമീറ്ററായി വര്‍ധിച്ചതായും അദ്ദേഹം വ്യക്തമാക്കി. പ്രതിദിനം ഒരു കോടിയിലധികം ആളുകളാണ് ഇന്ന് രാജ്യത്ത് മെട്രോ ട്രെയിന്‍ സര്‍വീസുകളെ യാത്രയ്ക്കായി ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നത്. രാജ്യത്തെ നഗരഗതാഗത മേഖലയില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ മാറ്റത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഉദാഹരണമാണ് മെട്രോ ശൃംഖലയുടെ ഈ വളര്‍ച്ചയെന്നും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി വ്യക്തമാക്കി. 2014ന് ശേഷം രാജ്യത്തെ വിവിധ നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ പുതിയ മെട്രോ പദ്ധതികള്‍ ആരംഭിക്കുകയും നിലവിലുള്ള സര്‍വീസുകള്‍ വിപുലീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. നഗരങ്ങളിലെ വര്‍ധിച്ചുവരുന്ന ജനസംഖ്യയും യാത്രക്കാരുടെ ആവശ്യങ്ങളും പരിഗണിച്ചാണ് പൊതുഗതാഗത സംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ വികസനത്തിന് കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രാധാന്യം നല്‍കുന്നത്. റോഡ് ഗതാഗതത്തെ മാത്രം ആശ്രയിക്കാതെ വേഗയേറിയതും കാര്യക്ഷമവുമായ യാത്രാസൗകര്യം ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ലഭ്യമാക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ഇതിലൂടെ ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്.
