One end can be cut off to make a light axe puck and the rest used as a regular sharpening stone. It is fast cutting even though it leaves a fine grind. Paired with a strop and polishing compound, it is perfectly adequate for axes. I would personally want to pair it with a finer stone like 4000 or 6000, but you might get away with stropping using polishing compound instead. The other king waterstones are good as well and they are the affordable brand of Japanese stones. The Bahco Farmer's file has a coarse double cut side for heavier steel removal and a fine side for smoothing and sharpening work. The fine side is either bastard cut or one cut finer, I'm not sure. This is a handier and more versatile file than the commonly recommended bastard file. The wide face removes a lot of metal. Although a large double cut file would be faster, the coarse side is coarse enough to do reshaping and setting up new axes from the factory. It also has a smooth edge and a cut edge. The price it totally reasonable and not all that much more than you'd pay for the crappy outsourced files produced with cheap labor and materials that are ubiquitous in hardware stores now.
