Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed part of his Requiem in D Minor, K. 626 in Vienna in late 1791. He was not in the best state of mind when he received an anonymous commission to compose it and believed he had been cursed to write a requiem as a 'swansong' for himself, because he was sure he was about to die. The Requiem is a Christian funeral rite that asks an all-powerful God to accept a human soul into heaven. It was left incomplete at Mozart's death on December 5, 1791. Mozart received the commission from an anonymous stranger while he was working on The Magic Flute and believed he had been cursed to write a requiem as a 'swansong' for himself because he thought he was about to die. He threw himself obsessively into the work but only managed to complete the Introitus and Kyrie movements before his death. The Requiem is renowned for its emotional power and Mozart's attention to text. He takes text made over-familiar to Catholic believers and infuses it with emotion and his own musical style.
