In 1945, Japanese schoolchildren were sent into the forests to dig up pine roots for oil intended to become aircraft fuel. Three years earlier, Japan had captured some of the richest oil fields in Asia. So where did the chain break? In this animated documentary, we follow Japan’s fuel tank through the decisions that drained it: a war in China that victories could not finish, the advance into southern Indochina that brought tighter sanctions, and a war against a country producing roughly twelve times as much steel—with no convincing road from victory to peace. Then came an offensive stretched too far and sea lanes given too little protection. Japan captured the oil, but American submarines helped destroy the ships needed to bring it home. We also examine a costly American failure: the Mark 14 submarine torpedo, whose major defects took roughly twenty-one months to resolve. Each decision has consequences. Together, they explain why Japan lost the war—and why that is a different question from why its leaders finally surrendered in August 1945. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 Pine Roots 0:39 The Tank 1:31 The War Without an Exit 3:11 The Road South 4:50 The Game They Ignored 6:54 Six Months 8:55 Victory Disease 11:01 The Other Side 12:16 The Leak 14:29 The Third Side 15:42 The Empty Tank 18:44 The Bill Which decision hurt Japan most: refusing to settle in China, widening the war, or failing to protect its ships?
