Once known as the independent Town of North Toronto before joining the City of Toronto in 1912, the area has evolved into what many now consider Toronto's "second downtown." Its central location, strong transit network, and rapidly growing skyline have made it one of the GTA's most desirable places to live and work. Toronto's construction boom has extended well beyond the downtown core, and nowhere is that more evident than at Yonge and Eglinton. Dozens of condominium, office, and mixed-use developments have reshaped the neighbourhood, while major transit investments, including the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, have positioned Midtown as one of the city's best-connected districts. Unlike the Financial District, Yonge and Eglinton has developed into a true mixed-use community where residents can live, work, shop, and socialize within walking distance. The concentration of high-rise housing, offices, restaurants, retail, and public spaces reflects a planning approach that centres density around rapid transit while creating a vibrant, walkable neighbourhood. With numerous towers still under construction and thousands of new residents expected in the coming years, Midtown's transformation is far from over. What was once North Toronto has become one of the city's most significant urban centres, demonstrating how Toronto's growth is increasingly spreading beyond its traditional downtown. Do you think Yonge and Eglinton has already become Toronto's second downtown, or does it still feel like just another neighbourhood? What do you think separates a true downtown from a dense urban district? #toronto #canada #midtowntoronto
