In a peaceful South Indian village, as the golden morning light touches the
tulsi plant at our doorstep — a young woman folds her hands before Lord
Ganesha, takes his blessings, and begins the most sacred cooking of the year.
Vinayaka Chavithi is not just a festival. It is a feeling. The smell of
fresh coconut and jaggery melting together, the warmth of the kitchen fire,
the sound of brass vessels — it takes you straight back to your grandmother's
home, doesn't it?
This video is a love letter to every woman who learned cooking not from a
recipe — but from watching her mother's hands.
Watch how traditional Kudumulu / Modak is made the authentic South Indian
way — step by step, with soul.
🌿 Made with love. Offered with devotion.
Ingredients — makes about 8–10
For the outer covering:
Rice flour – 1 cup
Water – approximately 1¼ cups
Ghee – 1 tsp
A pinch of salt
For the filling:
Grated jaggery – ¾ cup
Fresh grated coconut – 1 cup
Cardamom powder – ½ tsp
Ghee – 1 tsp
Cashews – optional
Process
Step 1 — Make the filling
Add jaggery and 2–3 tbsp water to a pan.
Heat until the jaggery melts.
Add grated coconut.
Cook on medium-low heat until the mixture becomes thick.
Add cardamom powder and ghee.
Turn off the stove and let it cool.
Important: Don't make the filling too watery, otherwise the kudumulu can break while steaming.
Step 2 — Make the rice-flour dough
Bring 1¼ cups water to a boil.
Add ghee and a tiny pinch of salt.
Reduce the flame.
Slowly add rice flour while stirring continuously.
Cover and cook for 2–3 minutes.
Turn off the heat.
When it's cool enough to handle, knead it into a smooth, soft dough.
Keep the dough covered with a damp cloth so it doesn't dry out.
Step 3 — Shape the kudumulu
Take a small ball of dough.
Flatten it into a small circle using your fingers.
Put 1–2 teaspoons of coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
Bring the edges together and seal.
You can make them round like modak or shape them like traditional kudumulu.
Step 4 — Steam
Place them in a steamer/idli plate.
Steam for 10–12 minutes.
Once the outer layer looks slightly shiny and firm, they're done.
🙏 Sweet kudumulu/modak are ready.
