KANDA 1985. One day inside a great Edo festival, told in ten original Japanese city pop songs — from three times the usual soba at dawn to a shoulder under the pole at dusk. 🌃 Tonight's story: He is twenty-five, a delivery man and apprentice cook in his fourth year at an old Kanda soba shop. On the day of the main festival he rides his deliveries through a town turned entirely to portable shrines. Learning that feeding a festival is part of the festival, he is given one stretch under the pole before the shrine enters. A note on this scene: every detail belongs to 1985. The Kanda festival is one of the three great festivals of Edo, and its main form falls in odd-numbered years, so 1985 is a main-festival year. The Kanda Myojin shrine, the district's old soba houses, and delivery by bicycle with a stacked wooden box are all of the period. No shop and no neighborhood association is named. 00:00:00 Kanda 1985 (神田1985) 00:04:12 Happi Coats Everywhere (半纏の街) 00:07:25 The Demae Apprentice (出前持ちの四年) 00:10:33 Pedal Through the Parade (祭の中を漕げ) 00:13:25 Soba Shop on Festival Day (祭の日の蕎麥屋) 00:17:00 The Ward Elder's Word (大旦那の一言) 00:20:33 The Woman Under the Beam (担ぎ棒の女性) 00:24:23 Ask the Okamochi (岡持ちに訊く) 00:28:17 After the Shrine Return (宮入りのあと) 00:31:08 Shoulders for Both (同じ肩で) 00:34:44 Kanda 1985 (神田1985) 00:38:56 Happi Coats Everywhere (半纏の街) 00:42:09 The Demae Apprentice (出前持ちの四年) 00:45:17 Pedal Through the Parade (祭の中を漕げ) 00:48:09 Soba Shop on Festival Day (祭の日の蕎麦屋) 00:51:44 The Ward Elder's Word (大旦那の一言) 00:55:17 The Woman Under the Beam (担ぎ棒の女性) 00:59:07 Ask the Okamochi (岡持ちに訊く) 01:03:01 After the Shrine Return (宮入りのあと) 01:05:52 Shoulders for Both (同じ肩で) (total 69m28s) All songs are original works — our own stories, lyrics and music, created with the help of AI, inspired by the Japanese city pop of the 1980s.
