KANDA 1985.
One day inside a great Edo festival, told in ten original Japanese city pop songs —
from three times the usual soba at dawn to a shoulder under the pole at dusk.
🌃 Tonight's story: He is twenty-five, a delivery man and apprentice cook in his fourth year at an old Kanda soba shop. On the day of the main festival he rides his deliveries through a town turned entirely to portable shrines. Learning that feeding a festival is part of the festival, he is given one stretch under the pole before the shrine enters.
A note on this scene: every detail belongs to 1985. The Kanda festival is one of the three great festivals of Edo, and its main form falls in odd-numbered years, so 1985 is a main-festival year. The Kanda Myojin shrine, the district's old soba houses, and delivery by bicycle with a stacked wooden box are all of the period. No shop and no neighborhood association is named.
