A Few Days a Year, Spearfishing California Looks Like This

Most people picture California diving as cold, green, and murky. And most of the time, they're right. Then you get a day like this one. We ran out to San Clemente Island — 60-odd miles off the Southern California coast — and found the ocean completely switched on. Blue water, fish stacked in every direction, and yellowtail coming through in numbers I've never seen here before. On more than one drop I was surrounded by so many of them I lost sight of the water. Not a figure of speech. There were points where the school was the whole view. You wait a long time for this. Most of the season is grinding — long dives, empty water, going home with nothing. We've filmed plenty of those days and we'll keep filming them, because that's the honest version of this sport. But every so often California decides to show you what it's actually capable of.
