Never Not Invited

Have you ever felt like you were not wanted somewhere, like the invitation just was not meant for you? In Luke 14, Jesus tells the Parable of the Great Banquet, and it speaks directly to that feeling. Three groups of people receive an invitation to the same feast, and what happens to each one reveals something powerful about God's character and His relentless pursuit of people. The first group makes excuses. They had already agreed to come, but when the day arrived, they backed out with reasons that sounded reasonable but were really just ways of saying something else mattered more. Jesus is clear about the consequence: those who keep making excuses will not taste the banquet. But even that warning is an act of love. The second group is the poor, the broken, the blind, and the lame. People who never expected an invitation. People who assumed they were too far outside to belong. And yet the master specifically sends someone to go find them and bring them in. The third group is found even further out, on the highways and hedges beyond the city. The master's command is to compel them to come in, because his house will be filled. The servant in this parable is Jesus Himself. He is the One who left the glory of heaven, took on the form of a servant, and went all the way to the cross to prove that you are wanted in His kingdom. Romans 5:8 reminds us that God showed His love for us while we were still sinners. Not after we cleaned up. Not once we had it together. While we were still a mess, He came to get us.
