Duskwood was once called Brightwood, a beautiful stretch of woodland south of Elwynn Forest, east of Westfall and north of Stranglethorn Vale. The name has not fit for a long time. A malaise now cloaks the land in constant darkness, the walking dead choke the graveyards, and worgen have overrun many of the outlying farmsteads. The sun does not so much set here as give up. The people will tell you the darkness has a source, and they are not wrong. A night elf named Velinde Starsong came to these woods carrying the Scythe of Elune. She was on her way to Shadowfang Keep, hoping Arugal could teach her about the worgen, not realizing the archmage was mad. She never arrived. The Scythe was lost, then found by a frightened man named Jitters, and when he carried it into an old mine, the mine filled with worgen, who ripped the men apart. The Nightbane pack that haunts the forest now includes both former humans and cursed night elves, summoned out of the Emerald Dream. They are not the tragic creatures that some other lands have known. These are feral, and they do not remember being anything else. The living gather in Darkshire, once a quiet hamlet, now a lantern lit refuge at the heart of the woods. Stormwind has all but abandoned it, and its soldiers are away fighting on the far front of the war. Lord Ello Ebonlocke serves as mayor, while his daughter, Commander Althea Ebonlocke, leads the Night Watch, a local militia that keeps the roads open and the darkness at bay for as long as it can. The people of Darkshire are jumpy and suspicious, and they have earned it. They will take any help offered, and then watch you closely while you give it. The worgen are not the only horror in the trees. The undead rising from the cemeteries are not Scourge, but the work of necromancers. At Raven Hill, the embalmer Abercrombie works in his shack among the graves, stitching together something he intends as a gift for the mayor, and it will not be a kind one. The ogres of Vul'Gol hold their mound to the east. Spiders nest in the roots, and the roads between the settlements are never truly safe. Duskwood is a place where every candle burns a little too bright and every shadow lingers a little too long, and where the smartest thing a traveler can do is keep moving until dawn, if dawn ever comes.
