Todays video will be discussing the downfall of Radio Shack.
RadioShack began in Boston in 1921 as a retailer serving amateur radio enthusiasts and electronics hobbyists. The struggling company was acquired by Tandy Corporation in 1963, and under Tandy it expanded rapidly across the United States. By the late 1980s, RadioShack had grown to more than 7,000 locations, making it one of the most recognizable electronics chains in America.
RadioShack also played an important role in bringing personal computers and consumer electronics to ordinary Americans. In 1977, it introduced the TRS-80 personal computer, which was available through thousands of RadioShack stores. The Smithsonian reports that more than 100,000 TRS-80 Model 1 computers were sold during its first year, helping establish RadioShack as a major participant in the early personal computer market.
The company's position weakened as electronics retail changed. RadioShack faced growing competition from online retailers, declining revenue, changes in the cellphone business, and competition from wireless carriers operating their own stores. After years of losses and unsuccessful turnaround attempts, RadioShack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 5, 2015. The bankruptcy marked the collapse of the enormous national retail network that had defined the company for decades, although the RadioShack brand has continued under different ownership.
