Emerald Sink 4 Cheryl Sink toward Black Abyss with Left at Second T

Emerald Sink. South of Tallahassee Florida on State Park Land. 6/13/25. My first dive in Emerald Sink and my buddies also. The sink can have quite variable visibility. The first 15ft or so can be very cloudy in the summertime. There is a very nice set of steps. The line for the upstream and downstream are located in the far-left corner opposite the stairs. They are tied near the bottom of a very thin old tree that stick straight up. The tree has line to tie of oxygen bottles as well. The upstream section toward the Black Abyss is the line the goes roughly under the steps or if you are in the opposite corner faced toward the steps it is in the right. The cave is very dark. It seems to eat your light. I often felt like vis was only 30 ft only to see lighter colored rock etc. and think it was 50ft or more. When we exited and could see the open water it appeared to be 70-80ft. Special thanks to Joerg Hess (NSS-CDS instructor) who happened along before our dive and gave us a very useful dive briefing. On the way in shortly after seeing the stop sign light can be seen on the left from a sink even Joerg could not name. We proceeded to the 1st T. Taking a Right is a longer route than the left. They both take you to Cheryl Sink. We opted for the left as we had never been and my buddy was on Open Circuit and was certain exactly what gas consumption would be. The second T is very close to Cheryl. If you have taken a left at the first it is another left to get to the Black Abyss or if you went right another Right. By maps I had found the Black Abyss gets down around 200ft. We simply swam the shallow circuit around the top of the Black Abyss and then exited the way we came. As of this date no DPVs are allowed but Joerg indicated some are trying to change this. Cave Atlas and Florida Cavern and Sink pages both had low resolution maps. The downstream tunnel gets to 180ft fairly quickly but the route to Black Abyss was less than 110 ft and only for a few minutes at that. While you can go far deeper at Black Abyss we did not.
