Japanese whisky, single malt whisky, blended whisky, Yamazaki, Hibiki Japanese Harmony, Nikka Coffey Grain, Taketsuru Pure Malt — most buyers assume single malt is automatically better than blended whisky. Without realizing it, that assumption shapes almost every purchase they make, and it's wrong more often than not.
Here's where it changes: some of the most acclaimed and awarded Japanese whiskies in the world are blends, not single malts. Hibiki Japanese Harmony combines malt from Yamazaki and Hakushu with grain whisky from Chita, and it regularly outperforms single malts costing far more.
The strange part is how few people know there are actually four categories, not two. Single malt, grain whisky, blended whisky, and a fourth category called pure malt, popularized specifically by Nikka, blending malt from multiple distilleries with zero grain whisky at all.
But there's a detail almost no one mentions: Super Nikka, one of the country's most storied blends, was created in 1962 as a tribute from founder Masataka Taketsuru to his late wife Rita, bottled in a hand blown crystal bottle shaped like a whisky still. Its exact blend has been kept private ever since.
This video walks through all four categories clearly, with real examples, so you know exactly what you're paying for the next time you buy a bottle.
