How to Vet a Contractor Before You Hire | Home Remodeling Tips A contractor can have great reviews, a professional website, and a competitive estimate—and still not be the right person for your project. Before you trust someone with your home and potentially tens of thousands of dollars, take the time to vet the contractor—not just the bid. In this video, I walk you through the contractor vetting process I use and explain why each step matters before you make that final hiring decision. We’ll talk about: ✔️ Why online reviews shouldn’t do all the vetting for you ✔️ Why independent research matters ✔️ What the contractor interview can reveal ✔️ Why you should ask to see previous work ✔️ What communication can tell you before construction begins ✔️ Why references are only useful if you actually contact them ✔️ How to look for consistency across everything you’ve learned ✔️ Why the lowest bid shouldn’t override concerns you uncover ✔️ What to do when something simply doesn’t add up I also share two personal experiences that changed the way I approach contractor vetting—one from my own remodel and another from helping choose a contractor for my mother’s bathroom remodel.
