How Did Ancient Humans Discover Iron? It Fell From The Sky What if some of the earliest iron humans ever worked with didn't come from the ground at all? Long before iron became one of the most important materials in human history, people encountered iron in a form that had literally fallen from space. Meteorites provided some ancient communities with rare pieces of workable iron thousands of years before humans understood where they came from. King Tutankhamun's famous dagger is one of the most remarkable examples. Scientific analysis of its blade found a composition consistent with meteoritic iron, showing that this extraordinary material had once come from beyond Earth. But meteorites were rare. Humans couldn't build a widespread metalworking tradition around pieces of metal that occasionally fell from the sky. Eventually, something much more important happened. People learned how to extract iron from ore on Earth. The study analyzed the composition of Tutankhamun's dagger and found that its nickel and cobalt concentrations are consistent with an extraterrestrial, meteoritic origin. Ancient meteoritic iron Meteoritic iron was used by several ancient cultures before the widespread development of iron smelting. Early objects made from meteoritic iron provide evidence that humans worked iron from meteorites long before iron production from terrestrial ores became widespread. Early ironworking and Anatolia Archaeological evidence from Anatolia and surrounding regions shows that ironworking developed gradually during the Bronze and early Iron Ages rather than appearing as a single sudden invention. The Hittites and early iron Hittite texts and archaeological evidence are important for understanding the status of iron in the Late Bronze Age.
