In 1417, a king from Sulu sailed across the sea to Ming China with a royal delegation, precious gifts, and a diplomatic mission. He never made it home. Instead, Paduka Batara — the Eastern King of Sulu — died in China. The Ming court honored him with an extraordinary burial, and a historic tomb associated with him still stands in Dezhou, China more than 600 years later. But the story doesn't end with the tomb. His wife and two sons remained in China. Their family line became connected with the local Hui Muslim community, and descendants associated with the An and Wen surnames still live in and around Dezhou today. This forgotten episode reveals something important about pre-colonial Philippine history: long before Spanish colonization, Sulu was already connected to major maritime trade and diplomatic networks across Asia. In this documentary, we explore the 1417 Sulu mission to Ming China, Paduka Batara's journey, his death in Dezhou, the historic tomb, the descendants who remained in China, and why this remarkable chapter of Philippine history is still largely unknown. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 — The Sulu King Who Never Came Home 01:05 — A Kingdom Before Colonization 02:35 — Three Kings, One Voyage 04:05 — Getting the Name Right 05:00 — The Journey Home That Never Finished 06:45 — The Family Left Behind 09:15 — Why This Story Almost Disappeared 12:15 — The Sulu–China Connection 14:25 — What This Story Really Proves 16:05 — The Human Story 17:05 — Remember Dezhou 📜 KEY HISTORICAL FIGURE Paduka Batara, also recorded in different transliterations as Paduka Pahala, was the Eastern King of Sulu associated with the 1417 diplomatic mission to Ming China. 🌏 FROM SULU TO CHINA The story connects the Sulu Archipelago with Ming China and highlights the maritime and diplomatic networks that linked Southeast Asia with the wider Asian world before Spanish colonization. 🏛️ THE TOMB IN DEZHOU The historic tomb associated with Paduka Batara remains an important reminder of this extraordinary encounter between Sulu and Ming China. 👨‍👩‍👦 A FAMILY THAT STAYED After Paduka Batara's death, his wife and two sons remained in China.
